Job Title: Rotating Equipment Engineer
Location: Fort Saskatchewan, AB
Length: 2 Years
Rotation: 5 days on / 2 days off
Role Summary
As a Projects Rotating Equipment Engineer, you will be part of a multidisciplinary engineering team supporting capital projects within a refinery and petrochemical environment.
The role is responsible for providing specialized machinery engineering support across the project portfolio, including design, installation, commissioning, and start-up of rotating and packaged equipment. The position works closely with Engineering Procurement (EP) contractors, construction teams, and internal stakeholders to ensure compliance with HSSE standards and achievement of Goal Zero.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Assurance
- Provide technical assurance and ensure compliance of all machinery engineering deliverables within the project scope.
- Ensure consistency and standardization of machinery design across projects.
- Support EP contractor detailed design activities and manage cross-disciplinary technical interfaces.
- Apply best-practice work processes, fit-for-purpose technologies, and approved design tools.
Rotating Equipment Engineering
- Support rotating equipment design, including:
- Selection of drivers, couplings, gearboxes, mechanical seals, and bearing lubrication systems
- Layout development and equipment packaging
- Equipment controls and safeguarding per company standards
- Ensure compliance with HSSE requirements, considering full equipment lifecycle impacts.
Quality & Standards Compliance
- Provide guidance on corporate, site, and industry standards, including technical position statements and best practices.
- Coordinate quality requirements in accordance with the company Quality Management Plan and Scotford Quality Manual.
- Provide Quality Assurance (QA) support strategies and plans for project execution.
- Facilitate variance and concession processes and obtain necessary approvals.
- Review and approve supplier and manufacturer exceptions, including Shell-approved vendors.
Testing, Construction & Commissioning Support
- Facilitate Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
- Support construction, commissioning, and start-up activities and resolve technical issues in a timely manner.
- Provide guidance on Requests for Information (RFI) responses.
Collaboration & Knowledge Management
- Participate in process design reviews, Process Safety Reviews, and HSSE design activities.
- Apply Human Factors, Operability, and Maintainability standards.
- Facilitate knowledge sharing, causal learning, and incorporation of lessons learned across projects.
- Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, contractors, and corporate engineering functions.
Professional Accountability
- Ability to authenticate (stamp) engineering work in accordance with APEGA guidelines.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary degree in Engineering with 10+ years of experience in Machinery / Rotating Equipment Engineering.
- APEGA P.Eng. registration required.
- Experience in refining and chemical operations.
- Strong knowledge of machinery standards, technical standards, and safe work practices.
- Background in Project Engineering considered an asset.
- Experience in contract management and front-line leadership considered an asset.
