Senior Accountant - Permanent - 19567

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a CPA designated Senior Accountant to join our client's finance team on a full-time basis. The ideal candidate will bring a strong technical foundation in multi-entity and project-based accounting, along with the ownership mindset to lead the monthly close from start to finish.

The Senior Accountant plays a central role in the financial operations of an established, multi-company construction organization. Working hand-in-hand with the CFO and Controller, this position leads the month-end close, steers day-to-day cash and treasury activity, produces the consolidated reporting that lenders and surety partners rely on, and administers the group's accounting system. The role collaborates closely with the finance team, project managers, senior leadership, banking and surety partners, and the external audit team.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Run the monthly close end to end, setting the close calendar, assigning tasks, tracking deadlines, and ensuring timely, accurate results
  • Build entity-level management reporting packages with month-over-month and prior-year comparisons
  • Book and review AP and general ledger accruals, adjusting entries, and other period-end journals.
  • Review results for accuracy and unusual swings, and explain variances against budget, forecast, and prior periods
  • Complete or review core balance sheet reconciliations, keeping supporting schedules tied to the ledger
  • Maintain monthly KPI and performance dashboards for the CFO, Controller, and leadership team, and support the Controller on group-level analysis
  • Contribute to the annual budget and periodic forecasts, including supporting schedules and variance commentary
  • Track daily bank positions, uncleared cheques, and deposits to determine available liquidity, and arrange approved transfers and credit facility draws or repayments
  • Vet payment requests against available funds and support disbursements and banking activity
  • Remit statutory payments online, including corporate tax and instalments, source deductions, HST, and EHT, and prepare quarterly interest and profit distributions
  • Produce consolidated financial statements, including intercompany eliminations, and deliver quarterly financial packages and contract status reports to lenders and surety providers
  • Calculate covenant ratios and complete quarterly bank compliance certificates
  • Compile the monthly work-in-progress (WIP) schedule, review it with project managers, and record the resulting revenue and cost adjustments
  • Act as a point of contact for external auditors, fulfilling requests and assembling supporting documentation
  • Administer the ERP, including period open/close, new GL accounts and entities, and job cost-to-GL mappings
  • Identify and implement improvements that tighten and accelerate the close and reporting cycle

About You

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • CPA designation
  • Degree or diploma in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related discipline
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within construction or another project-based environment
  • Hands-on experience with multi-entity consolidations, intercompany eliminations, and WIP / percentage-of-completion accounting
  • Exposure to bank covenant and surety/bonding reporting
  • Experience with Jonas or a comparable construction ERP is a strong asset
  • Advanced Excel skills with strong analytical, organizational, and communication abilities, and outstanding attention to detail

About the Job

  • This is an Onsite role located in the York region
  • The salary band for this opportunity is $100,000 to $120,000 depending on relevant previous experience, together with a comprehensive benefits package
