Salary Range: $75,000 – $90,000 annually , commensurate with experience
About Riseup Society Alberta
Riseup Society Alberta is a mission-driven nonprofit organization based in Leduc, Alberta, supporting individuals and families impacted by intimate partner violence and abuse. Through trauma-informed counselling, elder abuse prevention, and community education, Riseup works to reduce harm, strengthen safety, and promote healing across Edmonton and surrounding communities.
Riseup is also home to Rise Coffee, a growing social enterprise that generates earned revenue to sustain and expand clinical services while building community connection and awareness.
The organization is entering a critical next phase — strengthening financial sustainability, expanding impact, and building the leadership capacity required to support long-term growth.
Position Summary
The Executive Director (ED) is the senior operational and strategic leader of Riseup Society Alberta. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED is accountable for advancing the organization’s mission, ensuring financial sustainability, supporting high-quality clinical services, and stewarding the continued development of Rise Coffee as a mission-aligned social enterprise.
This role requires a leader who can build trust with the Board, navigate competing priorities, and make sound decisions in real time. Clinical expertise is valued but not required; exceptional leadership judgment, relational intelligence, and fund development capability are essential.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Organizational Direction
- Implement and steward the organization’s strategic plan in alignment with Riseup’s mission and values.
- Provide visionary leadership that balances innovation with operational discipline.
- Identify opportunities for growth, partnerships, and service expansion while maintaining mission integrity.
Board Relations & Governance
- Serve as the primary liaison between the Board of Directors and staff.
- Support effective governance through preparation of board materials, reporting, and facilitation of the board meeting cycle.
- Actively contribute to Board recruitment, onboarding, and relationship-building , supporting a healthy and effective Board-ED partnership.
- Navigate board dynamics with professionalism, transparency, and sound judgment, enabling informed decision-making and strategic alignment.
Financial Stewardship & Fund Development
- Develop and manage the annual budget in partnership with the Board.
- Ensure strong financial controls, reporting, and compliance with funder and regulatory requirements.
- Lead fundraising and revenue diversification strategies, including:
- Grant writing and funder stewardship
- Municipal, foundation, and government partnerships
- Individual donor engagement
- Corporate sponsorships and community giving
- Serve as a key spokesperson and relationship-builder with funders and external stakeholders.
Organizational & Team Leadership
- Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring high-quality, trauma-informed service delivery.
- Lead and support a small team of 2 - 4 staff, fostering a culture of accountability, trust, and collaboration.
- Scale organizational capacity as Riseup grows, building structure to support clinical service expansion, operations management, and enterprise growth.
Social Enterprise Oversight – Rise Coffee
- Provide strategic and operational oversight of Rise Coffee as a mission-driven social enterprise.
- Ensure financial sustainability and alignment with organizational values.
- Integrate Rise Coffee into broader fundraising, marketing, and community engagement strategies.
Community Engagement & Advocacy
- Represent Riseup in community, media, and sector spaces.
- Build collaborative relationships with community agencies, government partners, and sector leaders.
- Champion public education and advocacy efforts related to intimate partner violence, elder abuse, and gender-based violence.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 5 - 7 years of progressive leadership experience, ideally in nonprofit or mission-driven environments.
- Post-secondary degree in nonprofit management, public administration, business, social services, or equivalent demonstrated leadership experience.
- Clinical background is valued but not required ; strong executive leadership capability is essential.
- Proven fundraising experience, including grants and donor relationships.
- Demonstrated experience in financial management, budgeting, and organizational leadership.
- Strong relational intelligence, judgment, and ability to lead through complexity and change.
Work Structure & Requirements
- Hybrid work arrangement; flexibility in how time is structured between Leduc and remote work, with on-site presence required for strategic leadership, clinical oversight, and key relationships .
- Occasional evening and weekend work required for Board meetings, community events, and fundraising activities.
