The Brandon Sun, a national award-winning news organization in western Manitoba, is now accepting applications for a full-time reporter-photographer to fill a coming vacancy in our newsroom. We are looking for talented writers to investigate breaking news and produce compelling stories and features for both our online and print products.

Salary for this position is commensurate with experience, as per the company's Collective Bargaining Agreement. The Brandon Sun also offers a comprehensive and generous suite of benefits.

The Sun’s news footprint includes a population of more than 120,000 people. Though our newsroom is based out of the city of Brandon, we cover a large portion of western Manitoba, encompassing dozens of small and large towns, Indigenous communities and agriculturally based municipalities. Westman is home to countless festivals and popular music concerts that showcase local, national and international artists.

The Brandon Sun remains one of Canada’s leading small-city dailies. As a member of FP Newspapers Inc., The Brandon Sun is a sister paper to the Winnipeg Free Press and the Steinbach Carillon.

Qualifications

We ask all candidates to be active on social media, have proficiency in still photography, and be comfortable with various forms of multimedia reporting. This position will require occasional evening and weekend work. Prior experience in a busy newsroom is a definite asset.

Other qualifications:

• Superior writing skills and strong news judgment
• A curious mind and excellent interviewing skills
• A formal degree or diploma in journalism or extensive related experience
• Demonstrated ability to cover breaking news
• Outstanding research skills
• Familiarity with still photography
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
