About the Client
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a gentleman in his senior years who is currently managing terminal lung cancer and a fractured back. He resides in a seasonal trailer park between Owen Sound and Wiarton, Ontario, near Georgian Bay. While he remains mentally alert and engaged, he requires assistance with mobility and daily activities due to his current health challenges. He uses a commode chair and needs support transitioning from his chair to the bathroom and back. The space is a single-level trailer with minimal transitions, making navigation straightforward. He's on pain management medication (hydromorphone) that requires monitoring and reminders. This is the family's first time arranging professional care, and they're looking for reliable support as he works toward recovering mobility over the next six weeks while managing his ongoing cancer treatment with palliative chemotherapy and suppression therapy.
Responsibilities
- Assist with mobility support, including transfers from chair to commode and back
- Provide toileting and personal hygiene assistance
- Administer medication reminders and hand medications to client
- Prepare meals throughout the day
- Light housekeeping and tidying to maintain a safe, organized environment
- Provide supervision for safety given medication effects
- Monitor client's condition and communicate any changes to family
- Maintain a calm, patient presence during care activities
What We're Looking For
An experienced PSW who makes the client feel comfortable and respected. You should be calm, patient, and reliable with strong communication skills. The ideal caregiver takes initiative when needed, has experience with mobility assistance (walkers/wheelchairs), personal care, and medication management. You must be comfortable working in a rural trailer setting and able to handle the physical demands of transfer assistance. English-speaking required. Experience with palliative or cancer care is beneficial but not mandatory. The family values consistency and clear communication, as they'll be present mornings and evenings while working remotely from the location.
Schedule
Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM (12-hour shifts). The family is exploring having two caregivers split the week for better coverage and backup support. This is expected to be needed for approximately six weeks initially, with potential for continuation depending on the client's recovery and ongoing care needs.
