Mechanical Design EIT
SolarSteam Inc.
SolarSteam was born in Calgary, which is where we design our proprietary Obelix enclosed solar thermal collector. We're a 2026 NATO DIANA company delivering industrial heat, data centre cooling, and energy resilience capabilities to adopters around the world.
We're in expansion mode. Our manufacturing and discovery centre in Burlington, Ontario is standing up now, and our team in Calgary is growing out of our new office on 17th Avenue, and this role is based there.
We are looking for a rising engineering star who wants to take ownership, learn quickly, and help build technology that will be deployed in real projects.
If that sounds like the kind of engineer you aspire to become, this role may be for you.
The work
You will work directly with our engineering leadership and founding team on the design, modelling, analysis, and implementation of SolarSteam systems.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Creating engineering illustrations, schematics, three dimensional models, piping and instrumentation diagrams, and process flow diagrams
- Preparing bills of materials, component schedules, and system specifications
- Performing thermodynamic, hydraulic, and mechanical sizing calculations
- Designing systems and components using AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor
- Modelling solar energy systems using the System Advisor Model
- Supporting material and component selection, technical analysis, specification, and sourcing
- Participating in design reviews, engineering brainstorms, and implementation activities
- Coordinating with engineering, manufacturing, project, and leadership teams
- Presenting technical findings clearly and in the format required by different team members and stakeholders
Software proficiencies
Experience with some or all of the following is preferred:
- AutoCAD
- Autodesk Inventor
- System Advisor Model
- ANSYS or comparable simulation tools
We do not expect every candidate to have mastered every platform. We care about strong engineering fundamentals, curiosity, accuracy, and the ability to learn.
Who will thrive here
You may be a strong fit if you:
- Recently completed an engineering degree or equivalent interdisciplinary STEM program
- Have strong mechanical design and technical drafting fundamentals
- Are comfortable performing engineering calculations and explaining your assumptions
- Can move between detailed technical work and broader system level thinking
- Manage several priorities while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
- Take ownership of your work and raise questions when requirements are unclear
- Communicate technical information clearly and concisely
- Enjoy working with a multidisciplinary team in a fast moving startup environment
Experience with building mechanical systems, project management, thermal systems, fluid systems, ANSYS, or equipment selection would be an asset.
