Director of Internal Audit
Clarity Recruitment
Employment Type: Contract (18 months)
Location: Remote (travel required to mine sites, must navigate multiple time zones)
Rate: 100-130/hr (based on experience)
Industry: Mining
Position Type: Existing Vacancy
About the Opportunity
Our client is a publicly listed, mid-tier mining organization with global operations and a corporate finance team based in Vancouver. Reporting to senior finance leadership and working closely with executive stakeholders, you’ll lead the embedding and day-to-day operation of the SOX/ICFR controls program across multiple sites and geographies. This is a senior, hands-on program leadership opportunity combining deep controls expertise with strong project and change management—helping the organization deliver management certification for FY2026 and build readiness for external auditor certification in FY2027.
You’ll partner with internal audit, external testing support, ERP/IT stakeholders, and site-based control owners to drive remediation, elevate control ownership, and ensure timelines stay on track through high-intensity periods in Q4 and year-end (January/February).
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and own the internal controls/SOX program implementation and embedding across multiple geographies and operating sites
- Drive change management and deliver training for site accountants, control leads, and business stakeholders to strengthen control maturity and ownership
- Coordinate with external testing partners and internal audit to ensure testing quality and remediation effectiveness; perform QA over design and operating effectiveness work
- Partner with ERP/IT teams to define and implement automated controls and compensating controls during system transitions
- Provide regular program updates to executive leadership and steering committee; present at executive and board levels as required
- Manage and coach a network of SOX control leads across operations and corporate functions; escalate issues and drive timely deficiency resolution
- Build and manage program plans and timelines for design sign-off, walkthroughs, operating effectiveness testing, and year-end certification activities
- Travel to mine sites and corporate offices as required (including initial travel to Vancouver, BC and periodic site visits thereafter)
What You Bring
- Mandatory: demonstrable mining sector experience, including site exposure and understanding of mining finance/operational environments
- Strong Internal Audit / SOX / ICFR background, with hands-on experience in control design, implementation, remediation, and remediation tracking
- Experience partnering with external auditors (PCAOB/Big Four environments) and leading SOX remediation programs for public companies
- Proven project management capability leading multi-site, multi-jurisdiction programs across significant time zone differences
- Strong stakeholder management, training, and change management skills; able to influence at executive and board levels
- Strong analytical skills and comfort with testing methodologies and QA over testing outcomes
- Familiarity with ERP controls and automation approaches (experience with Pronto is a plus); exposure to remediation tracking platforms (e.g., Workiva or similar) preferred
- Willingness to travel periodically and work flexible hours to support multiple time zones (not a strict 9–5 schedule)
