Position Title

RDP Athletics Mascot (Hiring Year Round)

Position Summary

The Athletics department is hiring multiple positions with start dates throughout the year. Hours will be variable and dependent upon athletic game schedules. This posting will remain open until April 1, 2027 and review of applicants will be ongoing.

Rufus the mascot is responsible for representing Red Deer Polytechnic and for initiating positive contact and energy with the public at athletic, promotional, and public events.

The incumbent will be responsible for either: 1) performing the role of Rufus; or 2) assisting with the interaction of Rufus with the public.

Whether performing the role of Rufus or assisting with the interaction of Rufus with the public, the incumbent will interact positively and enthusiastically with the public at specified events. The incumbent is also responsible for maintaining the Rufus costume.

Position Responsibilities

Meet, greet and interact with the public at specified events:

  • Represent Red Deer Polytechnic by performing as Rufus the mascot or by assisting the mascot performer at sporting and community events.
  • Display high energy and generate enthusiasm with event attendees
  • Spontaneously interact with the general public, especially young children, in an energetic and enthusiastic manner at public events
  • Ensures the safety of the mascot (stairs, walking in crowds, boisterous fans, etc)

Promote Red Deer Polytechnic

  • Create an atmosphere of fun and frolic during specified events, increasing and promoting RDP school spirit.

Care of Costume:

  • Safely wear the costume
  • Care for the costume, cleaning after each use, reporting any necessary repairs

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven ability to confidently interact enthusiastically and positively with members of the general public
  • Proven ability to be able to withstand physical exertion (movement in a large costume; able to navigate stairs; able to remain standing or walk for long periods of time)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

$19.65 per hour

Benefits and Compensation Information

An additional 15% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation, statutory holidays and benefits.
