Manager, People & Corporate Services
Nucleon Energy Inc.
Manager, People & Corporate Services
Location: Calgary, Alberta
Company: Nucleon Energy
Reports to: Chief Administrative Officer
Employment: Full-time
About Nucleon
Nucleon Energy is developing a new uranium conversion facility to help strengthen the Western nuclear fuel supply chain. The nuclear industry is entering a significant period of growth, driven by increasing electricity demand, energy security, renewed nuclear development, advanced reactors and growing demand for reliable, carbon-free baseload power.
Nucleon is building the team and infrastructure required to develop one of the first new Western uranium conversion facilities in decades. We are currently a small, highly experienced team preparing for a significant period of growth as our project moves through engineering, licensing, financing and development. That growth creates an opportunity for the right HR professional to join early and help build the organization with us.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a Manager, People & Corporate Services to take ownership of Nucleon’s day-to-day people operations, recruitment and corporate administration. This is not a role for someone who wants to inherit a mature HR department and administer established processes. It is a role for someone who enjoys building them.
You will work closely with the Chief Administrative Officer and Nucleon’s leadership team to create the recruiting, onboarding, HR, policy and administrative infrastructure needed to scale the company from a small development-stage organization into a much larger engineering, project development and ultimately operating company. Initially, the role will combine approximately 60–70% People/HR responsibilities with 30–40% corporate and office administration. As Nucleon grows,
we expect the function — and the team supporting it — to grow as well.
Talent Acquisition & Workforce Growth
Lead and coordinate the recruiting process as Nucleon enters a significant hiring period, including:
- Translating workforce plans into approved positions
- Managing job postings including job descriptions, applicant tracking and candidate communication
- Conducting initial screenings and coordinating interviews
- Supporting technical and executive searches
- Managing external recruiters
- Coordinating reference and background checks
- Preparing employment offers
- Maintaining a recruiting pipeline and hiring dashboard
- Building a strong candidate reputation in specialized technical markets.
The ideal candidate does not need to be a nuclear recruiter today, but must be curious, resourceful and comfortable learning unfamiliar technical disciplines.
HR & People Operations
Own the following:
- Onboarding and offboarding
- Employment documentation and employee files
- Benefits and vacation/leave policies and tracking
- HR systems and records
- Handbook and policy development
- Policy acknowledgement
- Probation and performance review processes
- Job descriptions and org charts
- Compensation administration and benchmarking support
- Training and development records
- Employee engagement
- HR metrics and reporting
- Payroll-related employee information
- Workforce planning and headcount budgeting
- First-line routine employee questions
- Escalating significant issues to the CAO and external specialists as appropriate.
Policies, Compliance & Organizational Infrastructure
Own and contribute to the following:
- Creating and maintaining HR policies, procedures and templates
- Coordinating with employment counsel and external HR specialists
- Supporting Canadian and U.S. employment requirements
- Helping maintain employee, training and qualification records
- Supporting future security, regulatory, safety and compliance-related personnel processes
- Establishing consistent documentation/approval practices
- Ensuring HR information is organized, current and auditable.
The role is not expected to be the expert in every jurisdiction — it is expected to know when specialist advice is required and manage those resources well.
Corporate & Office Services
Own day-to-day administrative activities that keep the organization running:
- Calgary office administration
- New-employee workspace/equipment coordination
- Access and employee setup
- Travel coordination
- Vendor coordination
- Staff events
- Administrative procedures
- Procurement/office services
- Records/document organization
- Coordination with IT, finance and other providers
- Internal workflow improvements
As Nucleon grows, additional administrative resources are expected to be added.
What We’re Looking For
- Approximately 7+ years of progressive HR/People Operations or related experience
- Strong hands-on recruitment experience in a growing/entrepreneurial organization
- Experience building processes rather than only administering them
- Alberta HR fundamentals
- Comfort using counsel/external providers
- Excellent organization/documentation and written communication
- Strong judgment/discretion
- Comfort working with senior executives
- The ability to handle competing priorities.
Experience in energy, engineering, mining, nuclear, manufacturing, industrial technology, infrastructure, EPC/project development, technical consulting, scaling technology/project companies or Canadian/U.S. cross-border organizations is particularly valuable. CPHR is an asset but less important than practical experience, judgment and execution.
The Person Who Will Thrive Here
Someone who:
- Likes creating order from ambiguity
- Sees a missing process and naturally starts designing one
- Can move between strategic discussion and execution
- Enjoys recruiting
- Is confident enough to challenge a hiring manager
- Can deal with executives without being intimidated
- Does not need a large corporate infrastructure
- Understands necessary process versus bureaucracy
- Is highly trustworthy/discreet
- Takes ownership
- Can say “ I don’t know, but I’ll figure it out”
- Likes joining early enough to shape what the company becomes
What Success Looks Like
Within the first year:
- A professional repeatable recruiting process
- Support for significant team expansion
- A consistent onboarding experience
- A reliable HR system of record
- Organized files/policies/documentation
- Core HR processes and annual HR calendar
- Operational ownership of benefits/employee administration/routine HR matters
- Effective external HR/recruiting/legal relationships
- Administrative systems that allow executives to spend more time developing the business and project.
- Employees and managers should know where to go when they need help — and routine HR/admin matters should simply get handled.
Why Join Nucleon?
This is an unusual opportunity to join a company at an important point in its development. You will not be employee number 4,000 maintaining somebody else’s HR system. You will join early enough to help design the organization itself, work directly with the executive team, have significant autonomy, and play an important role in recruiting the people who will design, license, build and operate critical nuclear fuel infrastructure.
Application Instructions
We’d like to hear not only about your HR experience, but about something you have personally built or significantly improved — whether that was a recruiting process, onboarding program, HR function, policy framework, office operation or growing team. Please submit your resume along with a short note telling us why this stage of company building interests you to Sign in to view email.
