Choosing Wisely Canada (CWC) is a national campaign for reducing unnecessary tests and treatments in health care. CWC inspires and engages health care professionals to take leadership in reducing unnecessary tests, treatments, and procedures, and enables them with simple tools and resources that make it easier to choose wisely.

CWC is currently looking for a Research Associate. This senior position will support major strategic initiative of the campaign. In this position, the individual will support CWC’s patient engagement efforts by meaningfully engaging patients to bring greater awareness about overuse issues in health care. This individual will be responsible for the organization and operation of CWC’s patient advisory committee and seek opportunities to carry out patient engagement and showcase CWC’s work. A key component of the individual’s work will be justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives. The individual will explore the intersection of overuse and equity related factors, and particularly overuse in underserved populations. The individual will also be responsible for supporting the international Choosing Wisely collaborative.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a sustainable patient engagement strategy
  • Develop a strategy to support the international CW program long-term
  • Develop evaluation plans for patient engagement and international strategies
  • Participate in the CWC team and take leadership on major projects as required
  • Identify, analyze, and synthesizes scientific and grey literature using traditional and new methodologies
  • Support evidence synthesis and knowledge translation activities including literature reviews, conference presentations, and manuscript development activities
  • Develop presentations and present at CWC meetings, seminars, and conferences
  • Author scientific papers, funding proposals, and abstracts
  • Write research proposals and grants, submit proposals to external funding agencies, and secure funding to conduct research through grants and contracts


  • PhD in relevant discipline (e.g., health sciences, public health, etc.)
  • Patient engagement related experience required
  • Confident working independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to develop good working relationships with stakeholders to understand their needs
  • Experience leading focus groups, and deliberations an asset
  • Ability to take initiative and lead a diverse group of individuals
  • Ability to consolidate and communicate complex health information to different audiences
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Excellent academic writing skills (grant writing, manuscript development, poster, and abstract development) with demonstrated experience in these areas
  • Professionalism and self-motivation
